A world where flying solo doesn’t mean being alone

It was divorce, and life as a single parent, that spurred Rebecca Rotenberg to create Flying Solo. This series of cartoons, depicting life as a born-again single, helps people in her position recognize each other.

“I want single people and single parents to know they aren’t alone in their situation,” says Rotenberg, who has been divorced for 22 years.

Flying Solo, which started as a simple logo of mother and child flying a World War II fighter plane 15 years ago, is both a book and a 2010 calendar. Both feature Rotenberg’s original cartoons, as well as a number of new ones.

“Self-publishing the book has been a long-time dream,” Rotenberg says. “I wanted to see cartoons that depicted men and women equally and fairly. After all, when it comes to being divorced, widowed or a single parent, there are no boundaries. It can affect anyone.”

Flying Solo: The Lighter Side of Single Parenting is available for purchase at Collected Works and Single Pebble, or by emailing Rebecca at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

About Flying Solo

Rebecca Rotenberg has been Flying Solo since 1993. Flying Solo provides a glimpse into the awkward, uncomfortable and downright hilarious situations a born-again single may face, including dating, child rearing, and the relationship with the “ex”. The Flying Solo cartoons were picked up as a regular strip in the Ottawa Citizen for three years. Today, the cartoons are available in a book and 2010 desk calendar.
